The jazz age was a very well known feature in the 1920s, because the Great depression had just ended and jazz music and dancing had just became very popular. All this really happened in The United states, but it also happened in other countries to such as Britain and France. It played a large part in cultural changes, during the 1920s and even long after it was over its influence on pop culture continued. THE RADIO In the Jazz age, cities like New York and Chicago were the main cultural centers of jazz, especially for African american artists. In 1922 Jazz was introduced on large scale radio broadcasts, meaning that many Americans could listen to and experience alot of different styles of Jazz, without having to physically go to A club. The radio gave Americans a fashionable modern avenue for discovering the world through broadcasts and concerts from the coziness of their living room. The only negative about the radio, was that jazz artists like Louis Armstrong (African American), got a miniature amount of airtime, because most radio stations favored White Jazz singers. In the Urban areas, they played the greater amount of African American jazz than in the suburbs. THE YOUNG In the 1920s children especially teenagers, used the influence of Jazz to revolt against the accustomed cultures of the past generations. This youth opposition of the 1920s went head to head with fad like bold fashion statements (aka Flappers) and new radio concerts. African american dances for example the Charleston suddenly became popular among younger populations. All of these changes happening , were very different but not the way some people would like, because they thought these dances and the way young women were dressing, was very provocative or inappropriate. If you've heard of the term "The Devils Music", that's what they called Jazz, but only because Jazz used to be a slang word associated with sex, and because people (mainly women) began to realize that they were there own person and that it was time to party. Women In the jazz age, women suffrage was on edge and flapper women began to make a deceleration to Society. Since it was in the Roaring Twenties (Aka The Jazz Age), no one was invulnerable to these new moral beliefs that women were making. Later on, women were permitted to take part in the work force and do a mans job, so there were many more opportunities for women to become apart of the social life and entertainment industry. Suggestions about equality and sexuality were very well known at the time and women seemed to benefit from this during this time period, since most people began to change and to listen more. The 1920s saw the upcoming of a significant amount famous musicians that were women, and it has changed since then.
